Matt is an atmospheric science student at Cornell University in
Ithaca, New York, minoring in applied economics and
management. But in the beginning...At the age of 12, Matt coded
and designed a weather website for his local commnity with
weather data from a station he constructed and installed.
Throughout high school, he continued to fuel his passion for the
atmosphere by enrolling in meteorology-related courses,
including oceanography, physics, and his absolute favorite,
calculus.
In addition to fueling his desire to learn more about the sky
above us, Matt excelled in community service and
extracurricular activities. His freshman year, he joined the
career and technical student organization Future Business
Leaders of America and quickly rushed at the chance to spend
time with others his age to a become better leader. By tenth
grade, he was elected vice president of the his local, high school
chapter, and the following year, again elected to president. By
March 2010, he decided to run for a Vice President position on
the State Executive Council in Georgia--tasked with overseeing
the state chapter of more than 25,000 active members. Through
much luck and perhaps a bit of magic, Matt won the election and
became the South Area Vice President.
At the conclusion of his term in March 2011, Matt was one of
two delegates selected by the Georgia Department of Education
to represent the state at The Hearst Foundations United States
Senate Youth Program in Washington , D.C. It was here where
he discovered his auxillary interest of public policy and its impact
on the climate and atmospheric sciences. In addition to
networking with other politically active students, Matt met with
the President of the United States Barack Obama, Supreme Court
Justice Clarence Thomas, and other high ranking government officials.
